SANTA MONICA is a beachfront city and a popular tourist destination located in the Westside region of Los Angeles County. It is approximately 8.57 square miles in size and has a population of about 89,700. Situated on Santa Monica Bay, it has a 3-mile coastline fronting the Bay and is bordered on three sides by Los Angeles – Pacific Palisades to the north, Brentwood on the northeast, West Los Angeles and Mar Vista on the east, and Venice on the southeast. Santa Monica is a mixture of single-family neighborhoods, renters, surfers, professionals, and students. It has three main shopping districts, MONTANA AVENUE on the north side of the city, the DOWNTOWN DISTRICT in the city's core, and MAIN STREET on the south end of the city. SANTA MONICA PIER, OCEAN AVENUE, and the ANNENBERG COMMUNITY BEACH HOUSE are also popular destinations for visitors and locals alike. Santa Monica is also known for its members only JONATHAN BEACH CLUB. The city rests on a mostly flat slope that angles down towards Ocean Avenue and towards the south.
