VENICE is a beachfront neighborhood, in the Westside region of Los Angeles County, and a popular tourist destination. It is approximately 3.17 square miles in size and has a population of just over 40,800. Originally called "Venice of America," it was founded by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney as a beach resort town, is located about 14 miles west of Los Angeles, and is famously known for the VENICE CANAL HISTORIC DISTRICT. It also includes the Promenade that runs parallel to the beach (referred to as OCEAN FRONT WALK or THE BOARDWALK – a two-and-a-half-mile pedestrian-only promenade that features performers, fortune-tellers, artists, and vendors), Muscle Beach, handball courts, paddle tennis courts, a skaters and skateboarding plaza, numerous beach volleyball courts, a bike trail and numerous businesses on Ocean Front Walk. ABBOTT KINNEY BOULEVARD - also known as the "Coolest Block in America" according to GQ Magazine - is a principal attraction, with stores, restaurants, bars and art galleries lining the street. Venice is bordered on the northwest by Santa Monica, on the northeast by Mar Vista, on the southeast by Culver City and Marina Del Rey, on the south by Ballona Creek and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.
